OFS Philly Celebrates the Season of Creation with “Living Water”

PHILADELPHIA — St. John the Evangelist fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order will mark the 2026 Season of Creation with a series of opportunities for prayer, worship, education, and fellowship from September 1 through October 4.

This year’s regional theme, “Living Water,” draws from the words of Christ in the Gospel of John: “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst” (John 4:14). Throughout the month, Secular Franciscans, members of the wider Franciscan family, and friends are invited to reflect on our relationship with God, one another, and creation.

Events begin on Wednesday, September 2, with a Mass for Creation at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Philadelphia. 

On September 13, join us for Laudato Si’ Circle Day, with Mass followed by brunch in the parish center and a Laudato Si’ panel discussion on our theme of “Living Water.”  The program will include perspectives on care for God’s creation and Franciscan spirituality, with participants representing the Franciscan community and regional environmental initiatives. 

The series continues on September 26 with a screening of Roberto Rossellini’s 1950 film The Flowers of St. Francis, presented by Secular Franciscans. The classic film offers a distinctive portrayal of the simplicity, joy, and spirituality of the early Franciscan community.

The Season of Creation concludes with two events commemorating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi: the Transitus of St. Francis on October 3 and Mass followed by a luncheon on October 4.

All events will feature opportunities for prayer, music, learning, fellowship, and refreshments.
